Applications showcasing our optical fibre sensor system solutions.

Harsh wastewater environmental monitoring

Deterioration of concrete wastewater pipelines due to corrosion is a global problem that custodians of this vital infrastructure face daily. Premature pipe failure brings high financial, public health, and environmental costs.

Together with Sydney Water and Melbourne Water, we recently showed that optical fibre-based sensing platforms sustain performance in harsh sewer environments over long periods. Photonic sensing, therefore, promises to improve sewer pipe management by providing in-situ monitoring capabilities that will reduce the need to enter sewer pipes and provide superior predictive corrosion strategies.

Mapping high thermal gradients in furnaces

Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors find critical application in high-temperature furnaces, enduring temperatures up to 900 degrees Celsius. In such environments, custom sensor deployment enables precise monitoring of thermal gradients and material behavior. Together with Tata (India), our FBG sensors provided real-time assessment of temperature distributions within furnaces, crucial for optimising efficiency and ensuring uniformity in industrial processes. Our custom packaging ensured resilience against the harsh conditions, guaranteeing long-term reliability.

Measuring ferrous material integrity

Certain industrial environments pose a constant threat to material integrity and the need for robust corrosion monitoring is paramount. Our custom designed optical fibre sensors can detect corrosion-induced strain variations of ferrous materials, providing real-time data on material degradation. By measuring expansion with strain sensors, early signs of corrosion are identified, preventing catastrophic failures, and facilitating proactive maintenance.
